It gives me great pleasure to welcome you on the Waikato Muslim Association (WMA) webpage. The purpose of this page is to inform you about the aims and objective of the WMA, a brief history of Muslims in the Waikato Region, the WMA’s day to day activities as well as its major projects.

The WMA is a charitable organisation which was first registered with the New Zealand Companies Office in 1980. As the population of Muslim increased from just a handful families in 1970’s to about a dozen families, then the members saw it fit to establish an organisation of Muslims to represent the interest of Muslims and join as a regional organisation of the FIANZ. Today, Waikato Region is
of homesum 3,500 Muslims.

Current mosque located at 921 Heaphy Terrace was built in 1997. It provides a very important focal points for Waikato Muslims to gather for prayers, social spiritual programmes at this mosque. As a need grew, the WMA built an Islamic Early Childhood Education Centre in 2014 which is now fully functional for almost two years. Our members contribute in a number of programmes to connect WMA with the wider community locally and nationally. Our sisters (WOWMA) run a very well established programme for young Muslima which is now gaining international recognition.

Our mosque is open for the 5 time daily prayers, Ramadan gatherings, Islamic learning and any community-based social programmes. The mosque has been visited by three different Prime Ministers of New Zealand. A host of Ministers of the Government, four different Mayors of the city of Hamilton, a number of ministers from Muslim countries have also visited the mosque.

We were delighted to host Imam of Haram Shareef in 2014 by curtsey of Dawah Office, Saudi Arabia. We have hosted a number of distinguished personalities such as Dr Abdullah Mohsin Al Turki, Secretary General of Rabita, and delegation from the Islamic Development Bank.

The focus of the WMA is futuristic as it realises greater demand for educational facilities for our growing community. We enjoy tremendous support from members, City Council, Ministry for Social Development, Ministry of Education, New Zealand Police, FIANZ, Muslim World League, Islamic Development Bank. We have good working relationship with members of the diplomatic core who represent various countries.

Please take time to surf through our website to find out a bit more about the WMA. As members of the WMA, it will be our pleasure to be of service to you.

Dr Asad Mohsin
WMA President
