The Hamilton Jamia Masjid carpark was filled with delicious smells and sounds from South Africa on Saturday 9 December.
The South African brothers and sisters proudly shared their customary _braai_ with the Muslim and wider Hamilton community.
The word braai is Afrikaans for barbecue or grill and is a social custom in South Africa and neighbouring countries.
The South African brothers and sisters used traditional techniques to prepare and cook the delicious meats that were accompanied by salads, bread and drinks.
This was a unique opportunity for many in the Muslim community to experience South African culture and food.
They were impressed by the excellent cooking and enthusiastic, coordinated way the volunteers went about their work.
All food and drinks were donated by the South African brothers and sisters and a few other community members.
This meant that more than $3,000 was raised for the masjid renovations الحمدلله.
People are looking forward to experiencing food from another of the Muslim community’s diverse cultures in December إن شاء الله.
